Why a Root Canal May Be Recommended
A root canal is a dental procedure where your dentist removes damaged material (blood vessels, nerves and other tissues) from the interior of an infected tooth. This can help relieve pain while saving your natural tooth from extraction.
By removing the decay and bacteria from the inner parts of the tooth and roots, your dentist can help halt the spread of infection and restore the healthy portion of the tooth. Once restored, it will look and function like any other healthy, natural tooth.
Most patients who undergo root canals experience minimal discomfort once the infection or nerve irritation has been resolved. With proper care, including good oral hygiene and routine preventive care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime.
The Root Canal Procedure
Your dentist will start your appointment by examining the tooth and taking any necessary X-rays. They will then administer local anesthetic to keep you comfortable.
After the tooth is numb, your dentist will begin the procedure by carefully removing the diseased tissue from the tooth. Next, they will clean and disinfect the inner chamber and fill it with medicated material to help prevent infection.
After the root canal procedure is complete, the tooth is restored using a dental restoration, such as a filling and/or a dental crown.
