What are Dentures?
Dentures are custom-made, removable artificial tooth replacements designed for patients who have lost some or all of their natural teeth. These prosthetic devices help maintain facial structure and restore essential functions like proper chewing and clear speech. They can be used to replace one missing tooth, several missing teeth or all of the teeth.
Replacing missing teeth in a timely manner is critical for both oral health and overall well-being. If you are missing any number of natural teeth, dentures may be an affordable option for replacing them.
Types of Dentures
At Orleans Family Dentistry, we provide several denture options to address a wide range of dental concerns.
Whether you require a replacement for just one tooth, multiple teeth, or a complete set, our dentists will work with you to determine which type of denture best suits your oral health needs and lifestyle.
-
Full Dentures
If you are missing complete rows of teeth, your dentist may recommend full dentures. These are commonly referred to as false teeth or complete dentures.
These dentures can be custom fit for either your upper and/or lower gums, and they are held in place by suction and/or an oral adhesive.
You will be able to remove full dentures for thorough cleaning and to sleep.
-
Partial Dentures
If you are missing one or more teeth, then your dentist may suggest the use of partial dentures. Partial dentures can be an appropriate option for replacing teeth if you prefer a removable solution or if the surrounding teeth are not strong enough to support a dental bridge.
Partial dentures are made up of one or more artificial teeth held in place by fitting on/around your natural teeth.
Like full dentures, partial dentures can be removed for eating and sleeping.
-
Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures closely resemble your natural teeth, and many patients find them more comfortable and stable than regular dentures due to their secure fit. These dentures are designed to last a long time and allow you to maintain your ability to bite and chew.
Unlike regular full or partial dentures, implant-supported dentures can only be removed by your dentist.
Caring for Your New Dentures
Proper denture care is crucial for long-term maintenance. Here are some simple cleaning tips for your new full or partial dentures.
- Be sure to remove your dentures at the end of each day.
- Clean your dentures using a brush and paste designed for dentures.
- Soak your appliances overnight in a denture solution.
- Thoroughly brush any remaining natural teeth and the soft tissues within your mouth to clear away plaque, bacteria and food debris.
If you have implant-supported dentures, you can brush these just as you would your natural teeth and use floss threaders to clear away debris that may be trapped beneath.
